Moon City
Fall Studio 2015: Mixed-Use Housing
Community leaders in Springfield are leading a revitalization project to turn their neighborhood into a creative live-work district. This project is a proposal for a mixed-use complex that would provide housing, retail, workshops and community spaces for residents.
The three circular buildings each have a different housing and workshop/retail combination. A footbridge is integrated into the site to mitigate the barrier created by the train tracks which separate Moon City from a key commercial zone in northern Springfield. The forms of the buildings and bridge are a continuation of the sound walls which are curved to reflect sound and reduce the noise produced by the train. The cutouts in the sound walls allow light and air into the circulation spaces and the colored plexiglass inserts are representative of the creative energy produced by the residents.
