Dallas Mosque
Spring Studio 2016: Religious & Community Center
Located in a hypothetical religious complex adjacent to the Arts District in Dallas, TX. This project was about creating a connection between traditional religion and modern culture. The program includes a worship hall, classrooms and a butcher shop for halaal (traditionally clean) meat.
Informed by Muslim traditions and scripture regarding cleanliness my design for a mosque focused specifically on the ablution space where a cleansing ritual is performed before prayer. The water feature that runs the length of the site enters the building at a singular point, where ablutions are performed. The water also forms a pool around the worship space representing the connection between purity and worship. The natural patterns in the rammed earth walls act as the main decorative element in the interior of the building to keep the focus on the sacred atmosphere. The gold pillars on the front of the mosque form the entryway are an abstraction of the traditional minaret tower.
