Light Square
Global Design Studio 2015: Urban Planning
The site for this project was a public square in downtown Athens which had the potential to be a hub for the community and act as an axis between various points of activity in the neighborhood. This work is the culmination of my study abroad experience studying and researching the history and culture embedded in the Athenian urban fabric.
The main design goal was to create a safe and welcoming environment through design elements that would increase the amount of visitors to the space as well as extend the length of people’s visit, day or night. Adjustable light fixtures embedded in the floor and multimedia screens on the façade of some of the neighboring buildings would provide lighting and entertainment at night. A covered market area located inside the ground floor of the currently abandoned storefronts adjacent to the site along with water features, seating and vegetation placed through the square would turn the square into a destination spot.
